The pupil is vertical. This is the first fact, and it does not soften on closer inspection. It holds its slit with the patience of something that has never needed to blink, never needed to adjust to the light, never needed to look away. Against the ear — lobe or cartilage — it does not read as decoration. It reads as a record of something that was watching before the wearer arrived.
